Preventive Dentistry

At BRUSH Modern Dentistry, preventive dentistry is at the core of everything my team, and I do. We not only focus on your dental health but also how it affects your overall well-being. This includes preventive cleanings and examinations, but it might also include education on nutrition and how living a healthy lifestyle promotes wellness.

With so much information available on the connection between oral health and the relationship it has with overall health, I can certainly tell you that taking charge of your dental health is essential for your wellness.

What Is the Oral-Systemic Connection?

Studies over the years have shown there is a direct correlation between the bacteria that cause gum disease and that which is causing issues like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and dementia. Essentially they are the same and having gum disease can contribute to cardiovascular problems and vice versa, for example.

Taking good care of your dental health truly promotes excellent overall health and well-being.

Why Is Preventive Care Important?

When you visit my team at BRUSH Modern Dentistry for preventive care in Frisco, a few important things happen. I will perform a thorough examination and screening for issues like gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth decay every six months. I can detect these concerns in their earliest stages, often before you may even notice any symptoms, which allows you a better chance of eliminating the issue with less complicated procedures.

Gum disease is an infection of the soft tissues and bone that support your teeth, and if I can detect it early, you may be able to reverse your condition with a professional cleaning and an improved care routine at home, before the disease contributes to other concerns in your body.

When you receive a cleaning from our hygienist, she will remove the plaque and bacteria that cause many of these same conditions, giving you a clean slate to improve your home care routine.

Signs to Look for

If you are struggling with gingivitis, which is the early stage of gum disease, you may notice a few signs:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss your teeth
  • Bad breath that doesn’t go away
  • Gums that look red, swollen, or irritated

If you are noticing these symptoms at home, please contact BRUSH Modern Dentistry right away to schedule a cleaning and checkup. The earlier we can detect gum disease, the better.

If you are suffering from periodontitis, which is advanced gum disease, you may notice:

  • Your gums are starting to recede
  • You experience pain or tenderness when biting or chewing
  • Your teeth may begin to feel mobile or loose

My team is well-equipped to help patients manage periodontitis with a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing to remove plaque and bacteria buildup from below the gum line. I may also recommend that we use our dental laser to eliminate diseased tissue, and we may also deliver antibiotic therapy. Surgery with a specialist is best for patients with severe periodontitis.

We are here for all of your preventive needs! If you have questions about your dental health or it’s time to schedule your next visit, contact my team today at (214) 494-9298.

An extremely personable and caring dentist

I stopped going to any dentist several years ago. They seem to find something that would cost a couple thousand. I was at the point of never going to the dentist again. This time, I had an emergency today and had to go, and was dreading every aspect of it. When I called the office, a very helpful, professional, and nice woman was able to get me in on the same day. She was just as nice when I got there. I then saw the dental hygienist. She was awesome! I knew she had other patients but she just makes you feel like you're a VIP. I could tell she really knew what she was doing and she enjoyed it. The last person was Dr. Bhakta, and he was awesome! An extremely personable and caring dentist! I didn't sit there and hear a sales pitch. He made sure I wasn't in any pain, and explained everything to me in detail.

I was even impressed by my bill. I was expecting to pay so much more because I remember the bills I got from other dental offices. I never felt like he was trying to make money. If you really dread and hate going to the dentist, you got to try Dr. Bhakta. They made sure I had the best experience I ever had at a dental office! Thank you so much, Dr. Bhakta!

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing the right toothbrush is essential for maintaining your dental health; however, it can feel overwhelming with the large number of choices you have.

My wife and I and all of our staff members use the Sonicare Diamondclean toothbrush. Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes clean your teeth more efficiently than using a manual toothbrush. So, I do recommend that you use an electric toothbrush if you can. While they are higher in cost initially and you do have to pay for replacement brush heads every three months or so, the benefits they provide in removing plaque and bacteria from your mouth are worth it.

If you can't use an electric toothbrush, be sure to choose a manual toothbrush with medium to soft nylon bristles. Using a hard bristle brush could be rough and damaging to your delicate gum tissue. Be sure that the size of your toothbrush head isn't too big. The right brush head allows you easy access into the farthest corners of your mouth.

We are happy to discuss recommendations for the right dental products for your needs during your next preventive care visit. Or, you can feel free to contact my Frisco dental office with any additional questions or concerns you may have about oral hygiene products.

Many patients have concerns about the safety and necessity of dental x-rays, and I want you to know that they are an essential tool that I use to make the most accurate diagnosis possible. These images allow me to see what is going on in your mouth with your teeth, bone, and jaw joint, and I can detect concerns that I wouldn't be able to with just an examination. I can also share these images with you right away since they are readily available, which allows me to discuss your treatment needs with you.

At BRUSH Modern Dentistry, we utilize digital x-rays, which minimize radiation 80% more than traditional x-rays taken in the past. They also have minimal impact on the environment because we don't need the harsh chemicals to develop them that were required by traditional x-rays.

So it's safe to say that x-rays are a necessary and invaluable tool that I rely on. You can also rest assured that they are very safe and won't cause you harm. If you have additional questions or concerns about the x-rays we take or any other aspect of your dental care, I encourage you to contact BRUSH Modern Dentistry and speak with one of my knowledgeable staff members. We are always happy to answer your questions!
